ICAR-Network Project on Precision Agriculture
e-FARMS (Fertilizer Advisory and Resource Management System)
It is a science-based system that provides site-specific and crop-specific fertilizer recommendations to optimize yield and soil health.

By integrating comprehensive soil data, crop information, and desired yield targets, the Precision Fertilizer Recommendation System (PFRS) delivers precise fertilizer recommendations to individual field (Fig. 1). Through digital soil mapping, the PFRS captures within-field variability, producing detailed insights into nutrient status and other key parameters. Farmers, extension workers, and agricultural consultants can easily access the PFRS from the user-friendly online platform at http://65.0.105.229:8080/pfrs/. This accessibility supports informed decision-making, higher crop yields, and improved profitability, all while fostering sustainable farming practices.
- Digital access (smartphones, computers) and internet connectivity to use the web platform http://65.0.105.229:8080/pfrs/.
- Soil testing infrastructure for generating high-quality geo-referenced soil data.
- GIS tools and cloud/server infrastructure to support Digital Soil Mapping and spatial data handling.
- The Precision Fertilizer Recommendation System (PFRS) is currently operational for Madhya Pradesh, and can be scaled regionally using the digital soil map.
- Crop Compatibility: For major field crops such as Soybean, Wheat, Maize, and Chickpea; adaptable to others with available STCR data.
- Data Quality: Ensure accurate and representative soil sampling across the field; poor sampling leads to misleading recommendations.
- Regular Updates: Update the DSMs and STCR models periodically with new soil and yield data to reflect changing soil fertility status.
To validate the PFRS (e-FARMS), we tested it at three sites on the institute’s research farm, aiming for a maize yield of 5,000 kg/ha. The obtained yields were 4,800, 4,400, and 5,400kg/ha, averaging 4,867 kg/ha (97.3% of target), with site-level deviations of −4.0%, −12.0%, and +8.0% from the target, respectively. The tool received two copyrights, one ICAR certificate and officially released by Sh. Shivraj Singh Chouhan Jee, Honorable Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Dr M L Jat, Secretary DARE, DG, ICAR, 97th Foundation Day of ICAR.
- Enables site-specific nutrient management (SSNM), minimizing fertilizer waste and environmental harm.
- Enhances crop productivity by closing the yield gap between actual and achievable yields.
- Reduces input costs by avoiding blanket fertilizer application.
- Supports sustainable agriculture through efficient nutrient use and reduced leaching or runoff.
- Facilitates decision-making by providing visual maps and quantified recommendations.
